In the spirit of full disclosure, I should start by saying I’ve had issues with Coleen Rooney before.

For obvious reasons that I won’t go into for the zillionth time, I thought she had done women everywhere a gross disservice. This week, to my shock and awe, she did the complete opposite.

And if I’m going to slate her for the former, it’s only fair to give her a nod for the latter, right?

Coleen’s been shooting an advert campaign for Littlewoods in Florida (this is not what I am shocked or in awe about), and the photos that have emerged so far are properly refreshing.

Because even though it’s usually adorned with an outfit that cost more than the national debt of Greece, underneath, Coleen’s body is, well, normal.

She’s a celebrity, but she isn’t unattainably perfect. She’s real. She also looked relaxed, and totally comfortable in her skin as she posed for the camera.

Maybe it’s because I haven’t been able to get the news that there are currently three-year-olds with eating disorders in this country out of my head, but I think that’s an important thing for today’s highly pressured young girls to see.

It should also be noted that during a break in the shoot, Coleen enjoyed an ice-cream. As in, really, actually ate it in real life – as opposed to just insisting she does, all the time, in interviews. Bravo!

All in all, this is an exciting, unexpected step forward in a battle I’d assumed was long lost. Now I’m keen for the excellent example Coleen has set not to go to waste.

Littlewoods, it’s now over to you.

Coleen looks great in the photos, she’s obviously completely happy with her body, so you don’t need to airbrush them beyond all recognition, OK? We have seen the truth, and we like it, so there’s no need to lie.

Coleen’s body, as it really, truly is, will sell swimwear, honest. In fact, I bet it will sell even more, because this way we won’t have an impossible image of how the bikini should look just before we are forced to endure the horror of ourselves in it under a fluorescent light. (Changing room self-harming figures will probably fall dramatically, too.)

Why not make this the first time in recent memory where the girl in the photo looks exactly the same as the girl the photo is of? Go on, Littlewoods – I dare you.
